Three candles in amber glass. The gardens change with the season — these don’t.
A fruit, a flower and something dark underneath. These are the three we pour whatever the month, in the 30cl amber jar that keeps the light low and warm.
Each is poured a few at a time in Holyport, 220 g of wax on a cotton wick, and each jar is hand-numbered from its batch.
Crisp red apple opening onto peony, rose, jasmine and gillyflower, settling on soft suede.
The soft one.
A crisp red apple to open, then peony, and behind it rose, jasmine and gillyflower, that clove-scented cottage pink. It finishes on suede, which is what makes it more than a bunch of flowers: a warm, slightly powdery base that feels like fabric rather than petals. The gentlest of the three, and the one we reach for as a present.
This is the bedroom and living-room candle. It sits in the background and makes a room feel dressed without announcing itself. Burn it in the afternoon or early evening; by the second hour the apple has stepped back and the suede is doing the work. It's also the one we'd give as a present when we don't know someone's taste.
30 cl amber glass, hand-poured in our garden studio in Holyport. 220 g of wax, a cotton wick, up to 50 hours of burning. Each jar carries its batch number, written by hand. The pale wax and dark glass sit well together on a bedside table.
Let the first burn reach the edge of the glass, two to three hours, so it doesn't tunnel. Trim the wick to 5 mm before each burn. Never leave it unattended; keep it from children, pets and draughts.
Pear & Freesia if you'd like it brighter. Pomegranate Noir if you'd like it darker.
Pomegranate, rhubarb and plum over rose, jasmine and lily of the valley, resting on cedarwood, amber and musk.
The dark one.
Not a fruit bowl. Pomegranate here is the sharp, tannic kind, cut with rhubarb and a little plum, so the opening is bright rather than sweet. Underneath, a proper floral heart: rose, jasmine, lily of the valley. Then it settles into cedarwood, amber and musk and stays there for hours. It's the candle we light when the evenings draw in, and the one people ask about by name.
It fills a space. Light it half an hour before you want the room to smell of it, door shut, and it will carry through a sitting room or hallway without shouting. It suits the dark months and dark rooms: wood, low light, a table after dinner. Strong enough for a big room, so in a small one it's a candle for the evening, not the afternoon.

The amber glass is deliberate: it glows a deep red when lit, and hides the wax pool so the candle looks as good on the last evening as the first.

Pear & Freesia is the bright counterpart for the daytime. Peony Blush sits between the two.
Ripe pear and melon over freesia and rose, resting on warm amber and musk.

A batch sets overnight on the bench before the fronts go on by hand. The batch number is written on the base of every jar at pouring.
Up to 50 hours. That figure comes from an independent burn test of this wax, wick and jar, so it is "up to", not a promise of the full number in every room. Give the first burn two to three hours, until the melted wax reaches the glass all the way round, and it will burn evenly from then on. Trim the wick to about 5 mm before each burn and burn for no more than four hours at a time.
Candle care & safety →Candle Shack CS1, a paraffin/mineral wax blend with added plant wax, made in Germany. It is vegan-friendly. We chose it for its scent throw: the fragrance is held at 8% of the wax, on a cotton LX 16 wick, which is the pairing the burn test was run on.
An Amber Jar candle comes in a 30cl amber glass jar holding 220 g of wax. The jar is yours to keep once the candle is done: stand it a minute in hot water, wipe it clean, and it makes a good glass.
The core range is the bigger candle and will carry a sitting room or a kitchen. Light it half an hour before you want the room to smell of it, with the door shut. Two candles in one room fight each other, so one in each room is better than two together.
Every jar carries a printed base label with the hazard and allergen declaration the law requires, the net weight, the burn time, and a batch number written by hand at pouring. The full declaration for each scent is on its safety page. Never leave a lit candle alone, keep it from children, pets and draughts, and stop when a centimetre of wax is left.
